Why Does a Man Look Pregnant? Medical Conditions That Cause a Bloated Belly in Men

It can be surprising to see a man with a swollen stomach that makes him look pregnant. While this is sometimes caused by weight gain, it can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition. One of the most common causes is ascites, a condition in which fluid builds up inside the abdomen.

Ascites is often linked to liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, hepatitis, heart failure, or kidney problems. In such cases, the stomach may become round, tight, and increase in size within a short period of time.

Another possible cause is visceral fat, often called a “beer belly.” This type of fat develops deep inside the abdomen and pushes the stomach outward rather than downward. Digestive issues such as severe bloating, constipation, food intolerance, or irritable bowel syndrome can also cause the abdomen to swell temporarily, making it appear abnormally large.

If a man notices sudden or rapid abdominal swelling, persistent discomfort, difficulty breathing, leg swelling, or yellowing of the eyes or skin, medical attention is essential. A swollen belly can be an early warning sign of a serious health problem and should never be ignored.
