Which Egg Comes From a Healthy Chicken? The Truth Behind Yolk Colors

Many people believe a darker orange egg yolk means a healthier chicken or a more nutritious egg, but yolk color is primarily influenced by the hen’s diet. Foods containing natural pigments called carotenoids, such as corn, grass, alfalfa, and marigold petals, can produce deeper yellow or orange yolks, while simpler diets may result in paler shades.

A pale yolk does not necessarily indicate poor health or poor care, just as a deep orange yolk does not automatically mean superior nutrition or animal welfare. Some producers can also add pigments to feed to create a richer yolk color, showing that appearance alone is not a reliable measure of an egg’s quality or the conditions in which the hen was raised.

Factors such as feed quality, housing, hygiene, farming practices, and freshness are much more meaningful when evaluating eggs. Regardless of whether the yolk is pale yellow, golden, or orange, properly produced eggs can provide valuable nutrients including protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, and choline. In other words, yolk color tells you more about what the hen ate than how healthy or well cared for she was.
