What was meant to be a polished, glamorous Washington event quickly turned into panic when a security incident disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
An armed individual reportedly breached a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, leading to the sound of gunfire and immediate chaos among attendees.
Secret Service agents and law enforcement moved rapidly to evacuate key officials, including President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, from the venue.
Trump later said he initially misunderstood what was happening, telling reporters, “I thought it was a tray that clattered on the ground.”
He also stated that neither he nor his team had received advance warning and added, “We wanted to stay tonight,” describing how quickly the situation unfolded.
The incident reportedly began around 8:35 p.m. ET, when shots were heard, prompting guests to take cover while security teams converged on the source of the threat.
Witnesses, including CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, described a fast-moving scene as officers responded and attendees scrambled for safety throughout the hotel.
One Secret Service agent was injured during the incident but was later reported to be in stable condition, with officials confirming no additional injuries among attendees.
