In the couple’s well-publicized defamation trial this spring, a jury awarded Amber Heard $2 million. Johnny Depp’s legal team formally appealed that decision.

A Virginia jury found in Depp’s favor on all three of his defamation allegations after Heard published an op-ed in The Washington Post identifying herself as a victim of domestic abuse.

Jurors found the Aquaman actress guilty of defaming her ex-husband by making “false” claims about their relationship, according to their verdict. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor received $15 million in damages, which the judge later lowered to $10.35 million. They also claimed that the statements were made with “actual malice,” which is legal speak for carelessness or ignorance.
