Lucas stood frozen for a moment as the ambulance doors swung open, revealing his mother and cousin Richard, the family lawyer, waiting in the lobby. Their presence confirmed his worst fears. This was not a coincidence; it was a conspiracy.
“Lucas,” Margaret Bennett called out with a practiced smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “We were just in the neighborhood.”
Richard nodded, the folder clutched under his arm like a shield. “Thought we’d stop by and see how Emma’s doing.”
Lucas felt Emma’s grip tighten on his hand as the paramedics guided her onto the stretcher. He could sense her fear, the silent plea not to let them take control. He locked eyes with his mother and cousin, anger boiling beneath his calm facade.
“Emma is going to the hospital,” Lucas said firmly. “And nobody is taking our baby.”
Margaret’s smile faltered for a moment before she regained her composure. “Of course, dear. We’re just concerned about Em—”
“She’s my wife,” Lucas interrupted, his voice colder than he intended. “And this is my family.”
Richard cleared his throat and opened the folder, revealing a stack of papers. “This is just a precaution, Lucas. In case… anything happens.”
The paramedics began to wheel Emma toward the waiting ambulance. Lucas leaned down, whispering in her ear, “I’ll be right behind you, I promise.”
She nodded, her eyes brimming with tears. “Please, Lucas. Don’t let them win.”
As the ambulance doors closed, Lucas turned back to his mother and cousin. “This ends now,” he said with a finality that surprised even himself. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Emma and our child.”
Margaret stepped forward, her voice softening as if she could still sway him. “Lucas, you need to think about this. You’re putting everything at risk.”
He shook his head. “No, you’ve put everything at risk. I trusted you, and you’ve betrayed that trust.”
Richard shifted uneasily, the folder now feeling like a burden rather than a weapon. “Lucas, maybe we can discuss this later.”
“There’s nothing to discuss,” Lucas said, turning away. “You’ll be hearing from my attorney.”
He didn’t look back as he headed to his car, his mind already racing with the steps he needed to take. He had to secure Emma’s safety at the hospital, ensure their baby’s protection, and dismantle whatever twisted plan his family had set in motion.
As he drove behind the ambulance, Lucas’s heart ached with the weight of betrayal. But alongside the anger and hurt, there was also determination. He would not let them take his family away.
The night was far from over, and the battle had just begun. But for the first time in days, Lucas felt a flicker of hope. Whatever happened next, he knew he wouldn’t be alone.
