On April 29, 2007, in Manaia, New Zealand, five children aged 4 to 11 were walking home when two pit bulls suddenly charged at them. George, a 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, didn’t hesitate. He threw himself between the children and the attacking dogs.

George suffered terrible injuries to his head, neck, chest, and back, but his brave stand gave the children enough time to escape to safety. Sadly, his injuries were too severe, and veterinarians couldn’t save him. 

Today, a bronze statue stands in his honor on Kauae Street, where the community still leaves flowers. His courage is remembered by those he saved, including Richard Rosewarne, one of the children that day.

George never set out to become a hero. He simply protected those who needed him.
