Before reaching an age with any sort of maturation, the way a young boy may choose to flirt includes hitting, teasing or other actions that make little to no sense to do to someone you may like.
But what about when of the legal age to drink and out at a bar? Would kicking a girl’s purse, that she just dropped on the ground, away from her show you’re interested?
Across the internet, many sources say that not only is chivalry dead, but that chivalry was killed — and it wasn’t men who did the murdering.
“Chivalry, in general and in romance, is completely outdated and is only evident in medieval times,” a women wrote in The Collegio. “Truth be told, chivalry in its entirety died with the rise of modern concepts such as feminism and the realization that women need to be treated as equals to men. So, when we hear people, typically women, say that ‘chivalry is dead,’ is that such a bad thing? Simply put, no. Today, people do not necessarily need chivalric care and men are seldom equipped to provide it anyway, and that’s okay!”
Another person argues that a man opening a door for a woman is not a microaggression, but instead a kind act.
“The reason why a man opens the door for a woman is not that they think she cannot do it herself. In fact, in my personal experience, I have never met such a man,” William Biagini wrote on FSU News. “The reason why a man opens the door for a woman is that this is a straightforward, unspoken act that lets her know that she is special. Even though men know full well that a woman is entirely capable of opening the door for herself, they do it because it is a simple act of kindness.”
Heck, many men hold the door for anyone — no matter if they are attracted to them or not.
Someone on Reddit shared their viewpoint on whether chivalry is alive or dead:
Chivalry is very much alive, but men choose not to use it because of the fact that chivalrous men have been looked down upon as weak, sweet, cute men. The chivalrous man holds the door , the chair, the bag of a woman while she is seeing other men. That makes chivalrous men turn the CHIVALRY SWITCH OFF.
Coming back to the video, the guy looks very proud of himself for the purse kicking that he pulled off. And according to the Berkeley Beacon’s Sydney Thomas-Arnold that could be because chivalry is no longer something done by a man towards a woman.
“With the progression of feminism, society has made the natural evolution of focusing on equal pursuit and partnership,” Thomas-Arnold writes. “We are seeing men now transition out of their role as the dominant pursuers. This shift in the dynamic may uplift women and allow them the unique space to now be the chasers, simultaneously gives men the out when it comes to establishing themselves as a partner in general. The practice of weaponized incompetence among men has led to less of a drive to get to know a potential partner. It’s one thing to be genuinely unaware or unable to do something, but it’s a completely other thing to be aware of one’s ignorance and not put in the work to remedy this.”
